Can cats get heartworm?

Absolutely. Contrary to popular belief, feline friends can also get heartworm. They are usually not infected as much as dogs, because their bodies are less ideal hosts for heartworm. That being said, as many as 15% of cats in North America have heartworm at any given time throughout the year.

How can I stop my pet from getting heartworm?

It’s important your pet is on a heartworm medication plan, all year round, all their life. Even pets who spend all their time indoors need to be on some sort of preventative medication. Regular screenings are also key. These are done in the form of bloodwork that can detect proteins released by heartworms inside your pet.

How do I know if my pet has heartworm?
